Set a Purpose for Reading

Point out the “As You Read” question and have students think about how Covid-19 affected 2021.

2. Close-Reading Questions

1. What’s another good heading for the section “Bee Awesome”? Explain. This section is about the first African American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, so a good heading might be “Spelling Champion” or “Super Speller.”

(RI.3.2 MAIN IDEA)

2. According to the article, what is a hurricane and how can it cause damage? The article explains that a hurricane is a spinning storm that forms over warm ocean water. It brings heavy rain and high winds, so it can flood towns and destroy homes when it moves over or close to land.

(RI.3.1 DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING)

3. Explain how Covid-19 affected two news events described in the article. The 2020 Summer Olympics were delayed by a year because of Covid-19. And since Covid-19 kept some people away from theaters, movies like Vivo had first showings in both theaters and homes.

(RI.3.3 CAUSE AND EFFECT)

3. Skill Building
