The holiday season is here! Many people are looking forward to giving—and getting—presents. What’s at the top of your wish list? According to a recent survey, most Americans want . . . gift cards!
Many people say gift cards make the best presents. After all, you can use them to buy whatever you want or need.
But not everyone agrees. Some people think gift cards aren’t as thoughtful as other presents. They say picking out specific gifts for your loved ones shows you care.

Have you ever received a present you didn’t enjoy? Wouldn’t you rather have received a gift card? Then you could have bought anything you wanted! My dad uses gift cards to buy gas for his car. I like getting gift cards to my favorite store, Target.
Many stores sell gift cards, so they’re easy to find. I give gift cards to my friends. I put them in small envelopes. Not having to wrap a big gift cuts down on wasting wrapping paper.
Gift cards aren’t good presents. It doesn’t take a lot of thought or effort to pick them out. Many people forget about the gift cards they get.
Other people never even use them. For example, what if someone who doesn’t play video games gets a Roblox gift card? It will go to waste. If someone gives you a present you don’t like, you can usually return it. But many stores won’t let you return gift cards.
